Looking for a Catamaran Cruising Blog?

If you found this blog via a link from a cruising site ~ we did cruise Mexico on our Ocean 49 cat for a season. See the first text box on the right for links to our preparations, trip down Baja, life in Mexico, cruising and trip back up to SoCal. Unfortunately we are back to the grind in the USA...

Sourdough Bread

I am experimenting with two different sourdough starters, kindly given to me by my friends Toast on "Don Quixote" and Sue on "Yarnspinner".
Thanks ladies!

If it wasn't so much work, I would make a loaf of bread from each starter at the same time.
It's kind of "start the night before, then all day process the next day" kind of thing.
Kirby understands this ~ right?
But when I have the time to make it and I follow the directions exactly, it is SO worth it!
Especially with Mexico's lousy Bimbo bread...

This is the start of the "next day mess I make process".

And my best result so far!

Do you have a bread machine? I think a bread machine would be handy to have on a boat... like an electric tea pot.

I do have one! I love it for other breads, but the sourdough needs more rising time I think (gee maybe I should pull out the machine manual). When we are at anchor, I mainly use it to knead and then bake in the oven.

I wonder if this would work in a pressure cooker?

Maybe we'll meet on the way... I'm leaving San Carlos on the first weather window- looks to be about a week away. Christmas at sea!

Heather, that is beautiful! And I know how much work it is. Kirby uses his bread machine (he bought the one you told him to get) just for the first kneading because it is so hard to do. keep up the good work!

Sourdough starter! You're lucky somebody had some to share, I don't know where you'd ever find it in Mexico. I'm just picturing that loaf coming out of the oven, cut me a slice, I'll bring the butter!

Actually that is her nickname, but that is what she introduces herself as... Her kid's names are Roll, Bun and Croissant.

Uh, not sure about the pressure cooker. I have read you can bake in a coffee can in a pressure cooker.

We will look for you MxSailor! Or you look for us - we kind of stand out a little.

Thanks for the compliments on the bread - it's fun! You can start your own starter too. If I meet up with you 1stMate, I will give you some starter.

Toast, Roll, Bun, and Croissant!!! That is too funny! What is her husband's name? Could it be loaf, pastry, muffin, cookie....just wondering!
